When Guts leaves the Band of the Hawk after defeating Griffith in a duel, Griffith suffers a psychological collapse. In a moment of recklessness, he sleeps with Princess Charlotte. When this is discovered, he is arrested, tortured for a year, and reduced to a physical and mental wreck. A year later, Guts returns and helps the remaining Hawks rescue Griffith. But the man they find is no longer the one they once admired. His body has been destroyed, and he can no longer fight or pursue his dream. At that moment, Griffith’s Beherit activates and summons the God Hand. These demonic entities offer him a choice: sacrifice all those who are dear to him in exchange for the power to continue pursuing his dream. Griffith accepts. The sacrifice leads to the Eclipse, one of the most traumatic events in the manga. The members of the Band of the Hawk are slaughtered by Apostles. Griffith is reborn as Femto. In front of a helpless Guts, he assaults Casca, permanently destroying the bond that once united the three of them. Consumed by rage, Guts tries to save Casca but fails.
