However, if government does not respond to its demands, the group says it will organise what it calls a "real national shutdown" where "nothing will move." 🚧 The movement says its main demands include: 📌 A national dialogue on illegal immigration. 📌 Meetings with political parties to strengthen immigration enforcement. 📌 New municipal bylaws aimed at protecting township economies for South African citizens. 📌 More police and Home Affairs operations targeting undocumented immigrants and hijacked buildings. 📌 Public awareness campaigns against assisting people who are in the country illegally. The 30 June demonstrations followed months of growing anti-illegal immigration protests across South Africa. Ahead of those protests, government deployed extra police and military personnel after concerns that the demonstrations could escalate into unrest similar to the July 2021 riots. Although the protests were largely peaceful nationally, there were still reports of: 🚔 More than 900 arrests. 💔 At least one reported death linked to the protests. 💸 Millions of rands in business losses, particularly affecting township businesses. For now, no official national shutdown has been announced. The movement says it will first continue with weekly demonstrations over the next three months before deciding whether to escalate further if its demands are not addressed.
