They didn't sue her until she tried to trademark the name and sell products that directly compete with the company. a cursory Google search would tell you that's a bad idea. Patagonia's entire thing is it's brand. People don't buy from them for fashion, they buy the story and values of the company. I'm not a fan of big companies in general, but Patagonia has one of the best track records of any company out there. They can't just ignore a threat to the brand though.

pattie is in the wrong, theirs emails released that explain the full thing and many trademark lawyers have commented explaining it too, if they dont sue then they automatically lose the trademark
