The one thing that no one told me about 529 plan is that it hurts you on the fafsa if you or your child are the owners of that plan. BUT if the plan is in a grandparent’s name or another relatives name it doesn’t go on the fafsa at all. Found that out this spring as we’re filling out the fafsa for my son. Too late to do anything about it now and even for my daughter who’s a junior. Has to be at least 2 yrs without any changes

Why American parents don’t earn enough to pay a college for the kids? Other countries they don’t have that big of a problem. Americans seem to have to have two jobs to make ends meet and mostly of the countries people have just one job!

Converting this money to a Roth IRA for your child to me is THE most important benefit of a 529. They could be a millionaire by retirement just from this alone.

Only 1 caveat, theres is a lifetime rollover limit of $35,000 per designated beneficiary from all 529 accounts to Roth IRAs
