Barbell Pistol Squats - this is an excellent way to do the Pistol exercise with some weight that can actually help you balance while you're using it. Holding a bar out in front while you come down into the bottom of the exercise is kind of like how a tight rope walker uses a long bar for balance. Only this bar is 45 lbs... which also works your front delts and lower traps (they lock down the scapulae while you're holding it up). You need to be strong enough in the legs and in the upper body to hold the weight (you can use dumbbells or a lighter bar like an EZ bar as well) but it's a great method for making the actual performance of the exercise, ironically enough, a bit more doable. The exercise is performed the same way as normal with that bar in front being the only difference. It's a challenging exercise. The barbell here helps counterbalance your torso so that your ankles don't need to be quite as mobile in the bottom (my big issue). When you're doing just bodyweight, you need to have excellent ankle mobility so that you can lean more forward.
