First shown in 2001 and entering service in 2006–2007, it was designed as a rugged all-terrain patrol and infantry mobility vehicle, often nicknamed the “Russian Humvee.” It carries a crew plus up to 8 soldiers and can be fitted with machine guns, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, or remote weapon stations. Early Tigrs used Cummins diesel engines and armour capable of stopping 7.62 mm rounds and shell fragments, with more advanced versions gaining better protection and newer engines over time. Built initially in small batches for internal troops and police units like OMON, the Tigr saw combat in the 2008 Russo-Georgian War and later in Syria alongside Russian and allied forces. Upgraded variants such as the Tigr-M entered service in the 2010s with enhanced armour and weapon mounts. During the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, many Tigry were deployed with Russian forces, but sustained heavy losses in combat and by Ukrainian forces, with destroyed and captured vehicles frequently documented on the battlefield. As a result, intact and serviceable Tigr vehicles have become much rarer on front-line units, as losses erode the limited numbers originally produced.$
