It’s crazy that I came across this today because I’m dealing with this realization in real time. Fear based decisions repeat because they never actually solve the problem, they just postpone the discomfort. You end up choosing what feels comfortable and safer in the moment, so the original want is still sitting there waiting for you to deal with it. And every time you try to avoid it again, you make the same choice for the same reason and reinforce the pattern. The decisions that scare you are usually the ones that would have ended the loop. In my case, I made a decision to stay with an organization for fear of not finding better. I’m in the same predicament now where I want to change departments, but again I’m leaning towards staying in my role because I fear the added pressure that comes with a new and larger opportunity.
