I am a GP. I have 10 minutes. My room is the furthest from the waiting area. An elderly patient takes three minutes to get to me, then needs a minute to catch their breath. It’s winter, so coats off for an examination, then dressed again before we discuss the plan. Just as we’re finishing, they say, “I’ve also been having chest pain.” Do I ignore it because the 10 minutes are up? Of course not. That’s why GPs run late. It’s the reality of trying to provide safe care in a system that no longer fits the patients we see. It’s why so many GPs leave for good.

My GP seems to have put the government model in the bin. She’s wonderful and used the words, I don’t care about the time tell me everything, let’s get you sorted. She’s requested every necessary test and done every investigation without once disputing what I tell her. She’s a godsend. I appreciate her so much.

Yesssss this is literally the reason why the NHS is struggling so much in all the other sectors. Its literally the erosion, defunding and dissolution of the primary care system. The ambulance service has been yelling about this for yeara but the govt just closes its ears 🤷♀️

Oh honestly, our GP' are stretched. And people think they work about 4 hours a day! Because no one understands, research, referral phone calls, note taking, home visits...to name but a very few. My friend is a GP, she doesn't eat dinner before 11 o'clock week days. People complain about lack of time with their GP, they're just as frustrated.

So yeah… I heard chatter that AI will be our new doctors in the future. No more need for years of Med school, residency, etc. AI will instantly have all the medical knowledge known to man. What could go wrong? 😑

btw I'm from Greece and I visit my GP every 3 months because I take a lot of medications and every time we spend at least 30 minutes talking and she always does a full examination with vitals. sometimes she throws an EKG too.

Thank you for highlighting this. So many people malign GPs but have absolutely no idea what they had to do in so little time. Then there’s the hours of admin: safely authorising prescriptions, reading and deciphering path reports, referrals, forms, queries. That’s why the GPs I work with work late into the evenings and at weekend. All unseen and hidden work, and unpaid too. Xxx

and do t forget you are someone who has the knowledge and is able to advocate for themselves fully and there are those that really can't do a gp will take more time with them, which they need to do! I feel bad for GPs I really do.

They need longer appointments. The trainee at the surgery i worked at got a bit long but as they got use to the system they would cut them down to 10 minutes. It why GPs are chronically late because if anything becomes more complex and they take the time it comes out of admin time and lunch breaks. They need more GPs and longer appointment times

Patients with chronic illnesses, disabilities or rare illnesses etc should automatically be booked with at the very least a double appointment with the same GP.

50-60 scripts would be an easy day 😂 I’m a pharmacy dispenser, and we get anywhere from 200 to 400 scripts a day 😅 and when one is wrong it’s a nightmare for all involved! If the GPs had more time per patient, there’d be less mistakes, the time wasted fixing the errors would be much better spent getting it right in the first place! The whole system is broken 😞
