A PHARMACIST can absolutely ask why you’re being prescribed the medication for DOCUMENTATION. Everything has to be documented on the patients profile. Especially when to comes to control substances.

we need to know the diagnosis sometimes in pharmacy for government or insurance. dr can write the wrong drug or fake a prescription so that’s why sometimes we do ask. plus if you have many high alerts combination, we have procedures to document why we are giving you so many high alert medications! it’s a hazard and for patient safety. you don’t need to give us the story, but a diagnosis is always tied with a prescription, but the doctors do forget to put that diagnosis code, so we can get the diagnosis w the doctor or we can ask the patient. sometimes dr offices don’t pick up the phone or respond fast enough so that the patient can get early access to the medication.

HIPAA means that the pharmacist can’t go home and tell him wife about you and your conditions. It is ABSOLUTELY in his scope of practice to ask what you are taking and why you are taking it. (Pharmacy Tech of almost 10 years here).

I go to a pain clinic myself. The pharmacist are allowed to ask and you should cooperate like you did. I was told this by my pain dr. It isn’t the best situation because pharmacies are crowded and busy and you feel violated.thinking people can hear you. 🤷🏻♀️. But they are the ones filling your prescriptions and they do have the right to not fill them if they feel it’s excessive. It’s best to just answer calmly like you did. I’m sorry you’ve been through all of that. 🥺🥰

unfortunately pharmacists are supposed to do this And it is sometimes required for the medication so they don't prescribe wrong they don't mix medications stuff like that A pharmacist is basically a doctor of prescribing medicine they're not just a random customer service cashier

The pharmacist will ask what you’re taking something for because they need to document for insurance purposes and for DEA. But this was way more information then he asked for. All you need to say was chronic pain. You don’t need to give details

It's obvious no one knows what HIPAA is 😂😂 35 years of working in healthcare So I know it pretty well. She was the one giving out all the information so there's no violation. with that said it's rude. he should have asked her in private in an area where other people can't hear and I would have been upset too having to give him medical information out in the open where other people can hear but it's not a violation of HIPAA technically.
