@sjmy915: I went to my son’s 1st year prekindergarten graduation expecting him to be included like every other child. I thought someone would help guide him through the songs, hand movements, walking the stage, or even taking a graduation picture. Instead, he was mostly left to run around while the other kids participated together. As a parent, that feeling is heartbreaking and isolating. I understand my son’s diagnosis comes with higher support needs, but that’s exactly why support staff and paras are there , to help children participate, not be left out. Inclusion is more than allowing autistic children in the room. Inclusion means making sure they are supported enough to actually be part of the moment too. Every child deserves to feel celebrated. 🫶. #parentingstruggles #earlychildhoodeducation #inclusiveeducation #autismacceptance #advocateforkids

Preschool teacher here! We cannot force a child to participate in anything.

Are we missing the part we’re he’s interrupting the girl getting her award? He is being included, they’re letting him do what’s comfortable for him.

What exactly are you expecting from the teachers? The other children are there for an education as well.

If he cannot participate without one-on-one assistance, he is in the wrong setting. Teachers have to divide their time and attention between all of their students.

Dear Teacher, You're doing a great job ! Don't let the criticism from one parent deter you from teaching. ❤️

He’s not being excluded, he’s just not being forced to participate. He’s not upset, you are. It’s ok to feel sadness as a parent when the milestones aren’t what you pictured but it’s not ok to deflect that on to the teachers who are trying their best. There’s so much to do on special days like this they don’t have the availability to 1:1 you child. And honestly if they were forcing him to participate that’s when he’d be uncomfortable.

He’s included to the level he’s most comfortable. I think we remember the child gets to decide the extent to which he wants to be included and no one else.

Teachers can never win. We are never doing enough or we are doing too much.

As a autism mom: it’s a moment for all the children. Had the teachers forced him into stances or situations he was uncomfortable with, he could have responded in a way that was impactful for everyone. In this situation and at this age level, the teacher was right to allow him to be comfortable. And as parents, you can also step in to help the teacher by guiding the child in that moment as well.

Mama he can’t. They can not force him to do what the other kids are doing. The fact that he’s there IS inclusion.

I think you have to come to terms that your son may not do what other kids do but he was indeed included in the way that felt comfortable to him. You didn’t like it but he seemed at peace

There’s a difference between him being excluded and him being included, but choosing not to participate. Which is what I see here.

I think some counseling would be helpful in this situation to help you work through your emotions of what normal is going to look for like you. Because this is inclusion. He’s participating by being with the class, watching where he’s comfortable.

He is very much NOT isolated, he is being involved. You just don’t like that they’re letting him being involved as himself
