@george.kamel: I asked high school students about their post-graduation plans. We have failed this generation by making them think they must have a four-year degree to get a job. There are so many other options out there that are more affordable and don’t require you to go into debt.
I just don’t understand this argument. So everyone should just go into the trades now? We’re going to act like the pay that comes with the trades doesn’t (often) require strenuous physical labor, safety risks, working on holidays/weekends/12+ hour days, etc? That pay comes at a cost, just like degrees do.

You can be a Sonographer with an AS. You don't need a 4 year degree and community college is cheaper.

We need to stop teaching kids that they shouldn’t go to college… there are very little jobs out there without some sort of schooling involved

Wish we could normalize the gap year more, or have some bridge to help you better explore fields before committing to something that could cost you tens of thousands

The point is, don’t go to college and get yourself in debt, if you still don’t know what you want to do.

High schoolers don’t know what they want to do. College is a way to push off figuring out what to do. I know from experience

I don't have a college degree, but I had to work 3X harder and smarter than everyone around me. I'm also not eligible for some positions that I could be extremely successful in because I don't have a degree. So, I made sure my kiddo got his degree so he doesn't have that same barrier. Luckily, we were able to pay for his college out of pocket. So he graduated with a cyber security degree and a minor in computer science with no debt. So unless you're willing to do a physical labor job, I recommend a college degree but I would recommend going to a community college and commuting to cut costs. Additionally, the job you expect a land needs to pay four times the cost of the degree annually.

He is simply trying to show people that you do not have to go to college to get a good paying job. you don't have to go to a trade school either you can get into an apprenticeship program and make money while you are being trained. She, like a lot of people in this post do not understand what he is talking about. My daughter what's to do sonography as well and we already know she only needs an AS for this and it is already paid for. My son is doing Mechanical Engineering Technology.

So people willing to pay $300,000 so they can get a better paying job when they get a better paying job. They gotta use the extra money that they're getting from this better pay job to pay off the loan to get the better paying job.

It’s hard to really conceptualize that amount of debt when you’re young and don’t have to pay bills. You have no idea how long something like that takes to pay off.

I’m glad she has a career in mind. Sounds like she needs a more solid plan on which program or school she wants to go to and what the cost will be. If she can find a community college that offers it that would be very affordable. But some colleges charge an insanely high amount for the same info if you are out of state.

I get his point. they're saying "i don't know what i want to do with my life. getting an education is more productive than nothing. and it's probably more productive than working for the jobs I'm qualified for now".

It cost about $15-$25,000 for the whole program to get the job that she wants to get there’s no way it would reach into $300,000 range just wanna point that out there impossible this job that she wants to do is a $55,000 job to $85,000 at best that’s the most she can ever make in this job however, if I were her just to save her the problem I would get a job right now like a part-time job or whatever you know working in a fast food place whatever working in retail whatever she wants to do and put money aside for that student loan if it starts at 10 grand, I mean, she can make $10,000 starting her somewhere instead of taking out loans, you know what I mean. I don’t think someone should get into debt for what she wants to get a job for it. Also makes me wonder if AI would take over this job because all a person is doing is being in a room in a courtroom typing on a machine who used to say that AI won’t do that job because there’s probably a very good chance that would happen in the near future. I mean all you would have to do is let people speak in the room and put a speaker in the room that has an AI software attached to it and there you go with those to work for you.
