Eight students visiting Galveston’s Historic Pleasure Pier found themselves trapped nearly 100 feet in the air after the Iron Shark roller coaster suddenly malfunctioned during its climb. Instead of reaching the top and racing down the track, the ride came to an emergency stop, leaving the students suspended almost vertically above the Gulf of Mexico. For nearly four hours, the students sat helplessly in the blazing Texas heat, unable to move while emergency crews worked on a rescue plan. Photos from the scene showed firefighters extending a massive ladder to the stranded riders as they carefully secured each student with safety harnesses. One by one, the students were brought safely back to the ground. Thankfully, no one suffered serious injuries. Officials said the students were understandably shaken and were checked for dehydration after spending hours under the hot sun. The amusement park later explained that the ride’s safety system detected a malfunction and automatically stopped the coaster to prevent a potentially more dangerous situation.
