A #latergram, but a meaningful update: I’m now officially certified as a Malte Marten Method Handpan Teacher. Registering for @maltemartenmethod Handpan Teacher Training was my birthday gift to myself last year. Immi @johannimmanuel, the course manager, was almost ready to turn me down because of my limited handpan experience at the time — but I’m so glad I was allowed to join, learn, and grow through the process. Across my 30+ years of music exploration, the thing I enjoyed least was also the thing I encountered most: working through a fixed score, note by note, focusing on what we did right or wrong. It created tension, self-doubt, and slowly weakened trust. It rarely brought joy. And when I first started teaching music in university, that was also how I taught. I simply didn’t know other ways existed back then. When I discovered sound healing, something shifted. I began to see my relationship with music differently — not only as a system to master, but also as an embodied practice and a self-healing tool. I started studying neuroscience-informed drumming practices and improvisation-based playing styles, and gradually developed a teaching approach built around one idea: People shouldn’t have to wait until they are “good enough” to enjoy playing. They can enjoy playing from day one. Attending the Malte Marten Method Handpan Teacher Training felt like coming full circle. There was no fixed score to follow. Instead, there was a deep emphasis on how we teach, what we teach, and how we hold space for our students. Some of the concepts sounded so simple — and yet, once I embodied them, they completely changed how I would teach any instrument from now on. If you are interested in a more empowering way of learning an instrument, DM “HANDPAN” to find out more. #MalteMartenMethod #HandpanTeacher #HandpanSingapore #rhythmmeditation
