This is why as a vet tech student I believe that vaccinating all companion pets against rabies should be mandatory nationwide. No animal should have to suffer from this disease if there’s a vaccine that can prevent it

i worked at an equine vet hospital and we had a horse come in with rabies. exactly as terrifying as you might imagine. her whinny didnt even sound like a horse anymore. she was eating off one of her own legs. she would sit up on her knees and ram her mouth into the shavings, and then bite at the air. we did have to send her head off for testing. positive. she had bitten one of the vets and a fellow tech, drew blood and everything; luckily, they both had the full rabies vaccine, and were caught up on it. i hope i never see something like that for the rest of my life

more ppl need to understand the gravity of rabies viruses. like, im so insanely afraid of rabies and im baffled that so many ppl think its no big deal that they don’t get their pets vaccinated when it spreads so so easily and is 100% guaranteed to end up killing its host.

Rabies makes me so sad, the fact you can’t even comfort/pet them either and they have to suffer completely alone for everyone’s safety:( I also wonder if people with rabies are aware they do or are they just not there anymore after a bit? It’s terrifying

Im too geeked out for this, ready? Rabies is a virus that disguises itself as a white blood cell and it travels to the brain, not to go though and kill and ruin the victim, but to actually reset its thinking process to spread itself through more animals. Rabies originated in 2300 B.C aprox, and was discovered in humans about the 1700’s-1800’s when a man was caught bitting the chest off his new wife. Witnesses had said that they saw him getting bitten by a stray dog hours before. This virus isn’t nice and it’s genuinely impressive how it spreads itself and thinks. Cool fun facts! Possums are actually less likely to have rabies because they are cold blooded and rabies needs a warm blooded animal to survive. They are usually always in mammals meaning birds, water animals, and reptiles cannot get rabies. In about I BELIEVE 2006-07 the Chinese killed 50,000 dogs in 5 days due to multiple people dying from rabies, and rabies is the reason the myth of vampires and zombies started! I have much more but have fun reading!

rabies is actually so terrifying and so very interesting to me. it's also so frustratingly preventable, if people vaccinate their animals. and, if people get a rabies vaccine directly after being bitten. there shouldn't be any rabies anywhere. also, shout out to my boy Louis Pasteur, inventer of the rabies vaccine, before we even understood it. he couldn't even see it with their concentration of microscopes but developed a working vaccine. and also pasteurization cuz he's the goat.

I worked at a vet clinic and a curr jumped up and bit me on the lip and went through my bottom lip completely turns out the dog was there for vaccines that it hasn’t had in over 10 years including rabies I was so scared and had to get so many shots
