It would be manipulation if Jesus were offering a gift as bait to control people for his own benefit. But that is not the Christian claim. The Christian claim is that Jesus gives himself first, completely, sacrificially, and freely. Our loyalty is not the price of the gift. It is the natural response to discovering who the giver is.
