@illandbroke: A boy filmed himself dying because his insurance company denied his bone marrow transplant. In this scene from The Rainmaker, a jury watches a video of Donnie Ray Black — a young man dying of leukemia — making his own case for his survival. He tells the camera that a bone marrow transplant would have given him a 90% chance of living. His insurance company denied the claim. Repeatedly. Then his father holds up a photo of his son in a casket. This is a 1997 movie. But the story it tells happens every single day. As of 2026, major insurance companies including Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, and Blue Cross Blue Shield still classify most bone marrow and stem cell transplants as experimental — meaning they can deny coverage entirely. A bone marrow transplant can cost over $100,000 and in some cases over half a million dollars. Without insurance coverage, most families never get the option. Between 2021 and 2023 insurance companies denied an average of 1 in 5 claims. Fewer than 0.2% of patients ever appeal. Donnie Ray Black didn’t get the chance to appeal. He ran out of time. Share this with someone who has ever watched a loved one fight an insurance company for their life. #TheRainmaker #healthcare #healthinsurance #insurancedenial #americanhealthcare
