@atsbaseball: What caused the decline of black baseball players? In 1981, Black players made up nearly 19% of MLB, which was the peak at the MLB level. Legends like Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Reggie Jackson, Dave Winfield and many others were headlining the sport. But in the many years following, that number slowly declined. Today black players represent just 8% of Major League Baseball. Listen in on Dave Winfield’s take on the topic🔊 Full Dave Winfield episode is out now! Follow for more💨
Dave Winfield played both baseball and basketball on scholarship at the University of Minnesota.

Baseball and hockey are really expensive for parents these days. Private equity bought all the facilities in the US and Canada and it’s expensive now.

The park that i played at as a kid in youth baseball is a ghostown now. When i was a kid it was packed with games all day long on saturday. Travel ball killed local baseball.

I played in late 70s early 80 little league. I used my older brothers glove, never in my life owned bat or helmet, hell we even shared 1 team nut cup when we changed out catchers.
now it costs $2000 to outfit 1 kid!

He keeps saying “evolved” and I get it, but evolved implies improvement. Sure youth baseball evolved in a revenue sense, but nothing about the sport or the culture evolved. I’d contend it devolved.

New Orleans still has a great public recreation department. Kids get good coaching from 7-12. Then they go onto Babe Ruth, American Legion and HS ball. The entire travel team thing is crap.

I've always wondered why baseball isn't a more common highschool sport. Football and basketball are givens at any highschool.

when i was a kid in the 70s the older kids played baseball in my neighborhood. when i became old enough to play the kids stopped playing baseball and basketball / football. those were the sports we played. you need a bunch of kids to play baseball. unorganized. playing just for fun. once the older kid that lived next door hit the ball for me and I ran to 1st base. 4 year old me was happy that day.
