Myelomeningocele (often referred to as open spina bifida) is the most severe and common form of spina bifida. It occurs when a baby's spinal canal and backbone do not close before birth, causing the spinal cord and its protective coverings to protrude through an opening in the back as a fluid-filled sac.
The exact cause is typically multifactorial, involving genetic and environmental factors but Folic Acid Deficiency is one of the major, well-documented risk factor. Taking prenatal vitamins with adequate folic acid before and during early pregnancy significantly reduces the risk. Even if it's genetic, take enough folic acid.
