@soundoftheforest: Because I know people will probably ask the MRI is for endometriosis. If you are now reading the caption because you asked why before reading caption, welcome. I’m glad you got here eventually. For those of you who are reading the caption before commenting, I applaud you. ##autisticadult##autism##autistic
Wear comfy clothes (with no metal obviously), ask to test the music volume before going in (i got lucky and could barely hear the machine because the music volume was perfect). But other than that, it should be fine. I almost fell asleep during my lumbar MRI. If tight spaces are tough for you, close your eyes before it starts and don’t open them until you feel yourself moving out. It seems scary, but I promise, it’s really not as bad as it seems. You can also look up what they sound like beforehand if that’ll help.

autistic person who has had multiple mris for endo, as well as various endo surgeries, most recently a hysterectomy-
pelvic ones are generally decently fast and not nearly as bad as upper body ones.
if you do well with any form of panic medication you can tell your doctor you would like a one time dose of it for the day of.
you can wear soft earplugs under the mri-sanctioned headphones, just let the staff know.
looking up the sounds mris make a couple of days beforehand so you can adjust to the sound and it not be as shocking of a noise can help, which you said youre watching videos of them so youre likely already doing that.
if you feel comfortable doing so/have a medical advocate person who can- you can contact the facility beforehand and ask if they have a heavy blanket they can put on you during it for soothing, if that would help you. unfortunately not a lot of places do that but some do.
good luck, and if you ever need a fellow autistic person to talk to about endo stuff I am happy to talk about it with you.

for me I always think of it as I'm in the Shania Twain machine bc it does (to me at least) sound like the beginning of "Let's Go Girls" so I treat it like I have my headphones on but the headphones are just very very big

I had an MRI of my brain and I thought it was pretty cool! It’s very loud, but I call it the wub wub look inside you dubstep machine.

Requesting the soundtrack to project Hail Mary is awesome. I now know what I would request if I needed one.

i just wanted to tell you that MRIs cannot rule out endometriosis. i don’t know if you already have a diagnosis or not, but if you don’t and they’re looking for it, even if they don’t see it on MRI that doesn’t mean you don’t have it. 💛 good luck!

i liked my mri a lot (i’m autistic), but i am both fine with not moving in a tight space and i really love weird sounds. i thought the sounds were very interesting and stimmy.

I'm not familiar with the soundtrack you mentioned, but the headphones they have are seriously bad so don't pick something that requires good quality.

I read a tip to close your eyes and pretend you’re on a train and it helped. The womp womp sounds really do sound like a train. I fell asleep.

I have had several. A couple things to prepare for: they may have you wear provided scrubs and socks, you can ask for a blanket, they will play the requested music through headphones (it is still loud but cuts it down a lot). Call and talk through accommodations ahead of time so if there’s anything you can bring you can be prepared.

(as an autistic person whose had an MRI before) they make it sound scary when describing it but it’s actually not that bad it’s pretty much just like any x-ray except the bed is moving. For me the sound was a bit overstimulating but everything is IG😭 I hope you’re OK and I love your content

It’ll be okay! I have a ton of MRIs due to MS (they’re like 2 hours long) and often don’t receive music, so I just pretend the sounds are creatures from another planet putting on a talent show

Autistic and I just had my 4th MRI! The noise isn’t that bad especially when they can play music for you. It’s kind of heartbeat-ish. I discovered in my first MRI that I am claustrophobic, but that was the smallest oldest machine I have been in. It can be very jarring being slid into the tiny tube but they talk to you throughout and they give you a button/squeeze bulb you can use if you need to tap out. I had to and was able to be scheduled with an open MRI machine and that was much better.

I am too used to them but I can’t have them anymore cuz I have an implanted metal device 😅 I second having earplugs ontop of the headphones they will give you for noise control. They might not be able to play a specific selection of songs (soundtrack) but I had to stop requesting classical music cuz I kept falling asleep and they would have to reshoot cuz I would start moving 💀😅 So have a “type” of music as a backup to pick just in case? You could call ahead to ask?

I pretended I was trying to take a nap. I kept my eyes closed the whole time. She gave me a blanket (you can bring your own also) and they give you those foamy ear plugs and give you big safe headphones and will play what you request within reason and they let you choose the volume. Also they give you an emergency button to hold the whole time if you start panicking. Just in case.

I had a brain MRI, and spent the whole time coming up with every fact I could remember about my special interest. It meant I just had to lay there and think about dinosaurs. As they aren’t looking at your brain, ask about non magnetic silicon ear plugs

Rhiannon :
get non metal in ear, ear plugs. sometimes the music isn't available and sometimes their ear plugs are not very good. also they usually put padding tightly around your head which can be uncomfortable.sometimes the table moving is not smooth so don't panic if it jostles you a little. usually your face is quite close to the inside of the MRI. close enough to make it hard for your eyes to focus, so eye strain is a possibility. I advise having your eyes closed if you can. overall though not as bad as you imagine in your head. but yes they are loud unfortunately

The headphones they put on you do nothing, you barely hear the music. It essentially just screams at you the whole time, it helped me when I found the rhythm in it because I find it semi easy to zone out rythmic things ❤️

the machine is very loud but they usually will put over the ear headphones on you and let you pick the music that plays! it’s a little claustrophobic but communicate with the doctors ab your comfortability and they can likely also help with medication for any anxiety 💕 you got this!

Close your eyes the whole time and try to focus on the rhythm the noise makes rather than just the noise. Hopefully they’ll have headphones and ear plugs for you. Good luck!

it is quite loud. and holding still was hard for me. but with the sounds, they are very rhythmic, so I kinda turned them into a song in my head. that helped a bit
