1. You can't build a future here with one foot out the door🇳🇱🚪 Everyone's circumstances are different, and life will deal each of us different cards. But if you're constantly treating the Netherlands as a temporary stop, it becomes much harder to build a long-term future here. The way you think about your future influences how you show up every day, how you integrate, and how you invest in relationships and opportunities. People can often sense that level of commitment and respond accordingly. 2. Start learning Dutch as early as possible. Don't wait until you've become comfortable with the fact that almost everyone speaks excellent English. Learning Dutch is one of the best investments you can make in yourself. It opens doors professionally, helps you build deeper relationships, and gives you a level of confidence that is hard to describe until you experience it yourself. From my experience, once you become comfortable speaking Dutch, everyday life felt different. I personally felt more connected, more independent, and more confident navigating both personal and professional situations. Keep learning, keep practicing, and don't be afraid to make mistakes. 3. Invest in your network from day one. No matter what stage of your career you're in—whether you're a student, a recent graduate, or an experienced professional—it's never too early to start building meaningful connections. Networking doesn't have to be complicated or intimidating. Build relationships with classmates who share similar ambitions, connect with lecturers and mentors, and engage with people working in fields you're interested in. The relationships you invest in today can create opportunities you can't yet imagine. 4. Be intentional about the people you surround yourself with. The people around you can have a significant impact on your opportunities, decisions, and overall experience in this country. I learned this the hard way. At one point, trusting the wrong person nearly affected my residence status. That experience taught me how important it is to choose your circle carefully. At the same time, don't isolate yourself. The Netherlands can feel lonely very quickly if you keep to yourself. Be proactive about finding good people, joining communities, and putting yourself out there. Strong communities don't happen by accident—they are built through consistent and intentional effort. 5. Have a vision for your life and stay grounded. This is a country full of opportunities, possibilities, opinions, and different ways of living. That's a great thing, but it can also be overwhelming. If you don't have a clear sense of where you're trying to go, it's easy to get pulled in directions that aren't necessarily right for you. Take time to define what success looks like for you, stay grounded in your values, and make decisions that align with the future you want to build. These are some of the lessons I've learned over the past decade. I'm still learning every day.
