A little history lesson. The term Tartaria (or Tartary) first began appearing on European maps in the 14th century. Cartographers started using the toponym to label the vast, largely unexplored regions of Central and Northern Asia. Because Europeans had limited knowledge of the area, "Tartaria" was a generalized geographic term rather than a single nation. The label was almost entirely phased out by 1885. Mapmakers replaced the catch-all "Tartary" with exact political territories or regions, such as the Russian Empire, the Chinese Empire, Turkestan, Mongolia, and Manchuria.
