This is the first time I feel he may be mistaken, although I could be wrong as well since I haven't heard the full context before and after the statement. What seems difficult to reconcile is the natural sequence of development and discovery. Throughout history, inventions and knowledge have generally progressed step by step. For example, humans first developed simple tools, then inventions like the bicycle, and much later more complex machines such as cars. Each innovation built upon knowledge that already existed. If something like a bicycle had existed from the very beginning, it would raise questions about how it fit into that natural progression. If it were a living thing, similar considerations would apply as they do to animals such as horses. If it were a non-living object, then its existence from the beginning would seem to bypass the gradual process of human invention and discovery that we observe throughout history. To me, the idea of complex, man-made objects existing before the knowledge and prerequisites needed to create them appears to break the natural course of development. That is why the concept seems unusual and difficult to understand.
