Jimi Hendrix - "Like a Rolling Stone" Live in 1967 at the Monterey Pop Festival. Before 1967, Jimi Hendrix was a rising star in London, but remained a total mystery to most American listeners... You could almost even say he was a "complete unknown" in the States. His appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival changed that overnight. At the suggestion of Paul McCartney, Hendrix was given a slot on the final night, providing him the perfect stage to introduce his one of a kind flavor of guitar mastery to his home country, which would not only propel him to rock stardom, but also change the course of music as we know it once and for all, forever influencing everyone who would pick up a guitar afterwards.  Hendrix delivered a set that was both a sonic revolution and a theatrical masterpiece. He treated the electric guitar as a living, breathing entity, using feedback and distortion in ways the audience had never heard before. After covering Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone as we see in this video, the climax of the show became one of the most iconic moments in rock history when, during a blazing cover of "Wild Thing," Hendrix knelt before his guitar, doused it in lighter fluid, and set it ablaze as a "sacrifice" to his fans and to music itself.  The impact of those forty minutes was instantaneous. Hendrix walked off the stage as a global superstar, having effectively reinvented the role of the guitar hero. Monterey Pop itself served as the blueprint for the "Summer of Love" and the massive festivals like Woodstock that followed. Jimi’s fiery debut remains the gold standard for live performance. He arrived as a musician and left as a legend.
