Psalm 56:3-4 says:
Psalm 56:3-4 says: "When I am afraid, I put my trust in You. In God, whose word I praise— in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?" This scripture is not teaching us that fear will never appear. It is teaching us what to do when fear does appear. David did not say, "If I become afraid." He said, "When I am afraid." Fear is a natural human experience. We all experience uncertainty. We all experience doubt. We all experience moments where life feels overwhelming. The difference is what we choose to do in those moments. Most people allow fear to make their decisions. Fear tells them not to start the business. Fear tells them not to leave the unhealthy relationship. Fear tells them not to speak their truth. Fear tells them they are not capable. Fear tells them they are not enough. Fear tells them to stay small. But David gives us another path. He says: "When I am afraid, I put my trust in You." Not after fear leaves. Not after certainty arrives. Not after all the answers appear. Right in the middle of the fear. Trust is not the absence of fear. Trust is choosing faith while fear is still present. This verse reminds us that fear may knock on the door, but it does not have to sit at the table and make our decisions. As someone who has spent years helping people work through emotional wounds, trauma, anxiety, nervous system dysregulation, spiritual growth, shadow work, somatic healing, and personal transformation, I have learned something powerful: Many people are not being held back by a lack of ability. They are being held back by fear. Fear of failure. Fear of rejection. Fear of judgment. Fear of loss. Fear of change. Fear of success. Fear of becoming the person they were created to be. And yet every breakthrough I've witnessed in my work happened when someone chose to move forward despite the fear. Psalm 56:3-4 is an invitation to stop allowing fear to have authority over your life. To stop allowing anxiety to define your future. To stop allowing doubt to dictate your decisions. To remember that trust grows every time you take a step forward even when you cannot see the entire path. If fear has been speaking loudly in your life lately, remember this: Fear may be present. But faith can still lead. Trust can still lead. God can still lead. And sometimes your greatest breakthrough is waiting on the other side of the very thing you've been afraid to face.
