I don’t have maybe as storied of a resume as some but my way about is to put more effort than most and expect to be evaluated as such. If not or you see special treatment like someone’s slacker nephew getting exceptions or rewards, then it’s not an environment worth being in.

And more likely to be promoted. High performers notice problems that senior leaders aren’t interested in solving. Stop trying to solve the problem, and watch your salary rise while your integrity crumbles. Hoorah!

I used to exceed expectations every year. Then the process changed to where the executives downtown have to review all evals showing exceeds and a bigger raise. My boss is too afraid and wont bother with the extra paperwork so I no longer go out of my way.

I had an employer that literally structured the goals in a way that only contractors could be the top 5% and get exceeds expectations because contractors dont get performance based merit increases at all. So they made it where they literally didnt have to pay anyone extra for exceeds expectations….

I see it as salary optimization or aligning my labor with market value. If companies continue the sell us inferior and smaller products for the same price then I believe employees can utilize the same strategy.

My favorite is, "hey can you do this?" "That sounds like an 'exceeds expectations' task, I'm made painfully aware by my 'meets expectations' pay and review, that I don't get paid for that task."

AND I quit helping people. What that amounted to was On the Job Training, helping them get promoted based on MY knowledge, skills and hard work. Can you help me? Sorry, I’m working some tight deadlines this week.
