what about "old, mold, cold" ? This is not a fixed rule. The "l" in "folk" is silent because of historical sound changes in spoken English. During the transition to Early Modern English, speakers naturally stopped pronouncing the "l" sound when it was nestled between a back vowel (like the "o" in folk) and consonants like "k" or "m".
