I came to bejing 11 yrs ago an stayed in a hostel i was looking for somewhere to eat an walked in to someone's house i thought it was a restaurant but it was there home so they let me join them this is the family really lovely

The houses in Hutong are extremely expensive because they are located in the very center of Beijing. Many of them cost more than $10m. There is even a hotel built inside one of the hutongs, where the cheapest room costs more than $5000 per night. Some people say that Jensen (NVIDIA CEO) also owns a house in this hutong, worth more than $30m.

There use to be a lot more, but many of the extremely old Hutong’s were knocked down when they were getting ready for the Beijing Summer Olympics. My great-aunt lived in a Hutong in Beijing for well over 50 years, but was paid out by the government and had her home knocked down. It’s a shame because there was so much history there too.

These hutongs are historical relics—not that they can't be demolished, but the government has chosen not to tear them down in order to preserve cultural heritage. Located in Beijing's core area and possessing significant historical and collectible value, a single property can cost tens of millions or even hundreds of millions of yuan. Though they may look dilapidated, most people would never be able to afford one in their lifetime.
