@sonyasemmens: In totally cool and normal news, the largest data centre ever proposed in Australia is being quietly mapped out for Melbourne. Yep, right here in our backyard. ๐ซ Itโs a fun-sized โ175 MCG playing fieldsโ data centre that needs its own gas turbines to avoid tripping the power grid hahahaha. And BEST OF ALL it aims to attract global tech giants, who are known for not destroying everything they touch and taking all the profits to become extremely infinitely weโve-run-out-of-numbers rich at our expense. Thankfully someone in the Labor government probably got a junket or a campaign kickback out of it, so itโs very worthwhile. In unrelated news, the cost of water may increase and you should stock up now! ๐๐ป๐๐ป Or vote Green at the November Victorian election and well get rid of this bullshit. #datacentre #ai #melbourne
Funny how this data centre is ok but solar and wind farms are 'ugly'

These data centres are going to be utterly useless in 5 years. AI is not only draining the water and the environment, itโs likely the AI bubble will burst and weโre going to end up with vacant factories that are unusable

just an fyi to keep everyone safe, those data centres are practically unmanned and usually quite easy to get into.
stay safe out there and make sure not get hurt while inside! ๐ฅฐ

2.4 GW is about a quarter of Victoriaโs maximum power demand. Even with its own gas turbines, that could have a significant impact on the grid.

This is not the 90's ๐ these won't use water like back in the day - they will be immersive servers and are submerged entirely in a non-conductive, dielectric fluid to achieve maximum heat transfer while eliminating traditional water usage.

Data centres will make our waters dirty. They use so much water to operate. Did they ask the residents of Melbourne if this going to be ok.

For those in Australia not quite understanding what the noise and environmental impact is on the neighbourhood. Theyโre having all sorts of problems in the U.S. already with data centres regarding noise, electricity and water usage. https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSxn2U3Hn/

"who cares?" i don't think people realise that data centers use millions of liters of fresh water PER DAY!! & building these centers in a country prone to drought could be disastrous!! do we want ai or do we want drinking water?

Yeahโฆ Canโt have any manufacturing because the price of power makes it impossible for businesses to make a profit, yet it itโs profitable to run this giant data center that primarily operates on power alone!? Is the taxpayer funding the power bill?
