@themelungeonguy: Think you know Southern Appalachian speech? In this video, I’m saying the Southern Appalachian word: “sigogglin.” “Sigogglin” means something is crooked, uneven, out of alignment, or not sitting quite right. You might hear someone say a fence post, picture frame, porch step, or even a hat is “sigogglin” if it’s leaning or off-kilter. The word is especially associated with Appalachia and the Southern Highlands. Its exact origin is debated, but many linguists believe it developed from older Scots, Scots-Irish, or regional English dialect words brought to Appalachia by settlers from the British Isles. Like many Appalachian expressions, it survived in mountain communities long after similar words disappeared elsewhere. Words like “sigogglin” are part of the rich linguistic heritage of Appalachia, reflecting generations of Scots-Irish, English, German, and other influences that helped shape the region’s unique way of speaking. This channel explores real Southern and Appalachian sayings, slang, accents, and dialect — seeing if people can recognize authentic regional speech just by hearing it. Drop your guess in the comments and tell me if you’ve heard this word before, and what people in your area use instead. #southern #dialects #linguistics #languageandidentity #appalachia

I have never heard sigogglin before. We say Womper-jawed: crooked, askew, at an odd or incorrect angle.
I am Texan but have Appalachian roots.

Also, we always said, “You look like a woollyhawn,” meaning you needed a haircut, were shaggy. Have you heard of that? I can’t find too many folk who say this and wonder about it. Thanks! Love the Toks!
