I wanna address something as a lotf fan, a jimon shipper, and a young queer girl. I've seen a lot of people, both inside and outside the fandom, criticize jimon because jack and simon barely interacted in the book. I've loved lotf since 2019. after reading the book, I watched the films and was actually a huge jalph shipper (I was also very young). I still love jalph, but I also love what the bbc series did with jack and simon’s relationship. It adds depth to both characters and makes the tragedy even more heartbreaking. that said, I don't think simon should ever be reduced to just his relationship with jack. wether jimon was a thing or not, or ralmon for that matter, simon is one of the most important characters in the story. he represents innocence, morality, spirituality, and so much more. I've also seen people say that adding queer characters to stories that "aren't about being queer" is unnecessary. I disagree. we already have amazing queer stories where sexuality is the main focus, but I think representation is even more meaningful when queer people simply exist in stories without that being the entire plot. It feels more natural. yellowjackets, paper girls, stranger things, and now lord of the flies are good examples - all of these mean so much to me. even the original novel has queer themes. to straight people, it might not seem important, but representation really matters to queer people. I personally relate to jack in the series because I read him as struggling with internalized homophobia. seeing characters like that makes me feel seen. If representation makes queer people happy without taking away from the story's themes, why should it bother anyone else? another thing I've seen is people saying, “shipping 12-year-olds is weird" or "you're sexualizing them." while there unfortunately are people who cross boundaries, I can confidently say that most of the fandoms shippers are not doing that. children have crushes. that's completely normal, regardless of gender. calling every same-sex ship between kids "sexualizing" often feels rooted in homophobia, because if jack or simon were a girl, far fewer people would have an issue with it. I realized I was gay when I was very young. I had fictional crushes on girls in elementary school, and my first real crush was on a girl in fifth grade - I was younger than the biguns in lotf. those feelings were real. I struggled with internalized homophobia for years and only recently started accepting myself. I'm still not out yet. If I'd had representation like jimon back then, it would've meant so much to me. even though their story is tragic, it still matters. queer people deserve characters they can relate to, even in stories where romance isn't the main focus. I understand that not everything needs to be gay. but in 2026, adding queer representation to a story isn't hurting anyone. In the bbc series, the relationship between jack and simon is clearly written with romantic subtext, and simon is canonically queer within this adaptation. considering william goulding as a closeted gay man and drew from himself when writing Simon, I think this interpretation is a beautiful addition rather than a betrayal of the original. at the end of the day, jack and simon are just two young boys trying to understand emotions they don't fully have the words for. I think their relationship is beautifully written, and it makes me sad that some people only see it negatively. I would’ve added all the ships from lotf, but I would probably get hate for “making them all gay” lmao, so this is mainly about my favorite one - and the most canon one, jimon :’) maybe this will change your perspective on it, maybe it won’t, either way I wanted to get this off my chest<3 #jimon #lordoftheflies #lgbtq #representation #edit
