Throat singing an ancient Greek hymn for protection, good fortune, magick, guidance, threshold crossing, and transformation. This chant invokes Hecate through ancient Orphic epithets associated with her presence across multiple realms — celestial, earthly, and sea-bound. Traditionally, Hecate was called upon at crossroads and transitional spaces as a guardian, guide, and witness to moments of change. In later esoteric and occult traditions, she also became associated with ritual practice, hidden knowledge, mystery, and working with the unseen. In my last Ancient Greek video posted almost a year ago, a few comments from Greeks claimed that my pronunciation was off. It has come to my understanding that the modern Greek language evolved from Ancient Greek and though they share very similar written words, ancient and modern greek have very different pronunciations though many people especially in Greece insist they are the very much the same. This particular recording explores the contrast between reconstructed Ancient Greek pronunciation and modern Greek pronunciation side by side, showing how the sound of the language may have shifted across centuries while preserving the same invocation. The contrast changes the texture and atmosphere of the hymn while keeping the underlying meaning intact. The line invokes Hecate as one who moves between worlds: heavenly, earthly, and of the sea — reflecting movement across states of being, inner transformation, intuition, and navigating the unknown. These exact lines are the opening of the Orphic Hymn to Hecate (Hymn 1), which was composed during the Imperial Roman era (roughly between the 2nd and 4th century CE). Ἑκάτην κλῄζω τριοδῖτιν, ἐραννήν, οὐρανίην χθονίην τε καὶ εἰναλίην “I invoke Hecate of the three ways, the lovely one, heavenly, earthly, and of the sea.” The Orphic Hymns are a collection of devotional Greek hymns dedicated to deities and cosmic forces and remain among the most well-known surviving examples of late ancient sacred poetry.
