@isabelcantomusic: I do not want to be making videos like this. I just want to take trains like anyone else, attend cool places to make opera content for you divas, and go home. But this is the reality of getting public transport as a wheelchair user. We have jobs to get to, appointments, events; but simply getting to those places is a battle. I find some irony in the fact that disabled people are constantly villainised for not working or “not contributing to society”, but when we do, the services to get us to work fail us. I’ve recently been criticised for becoming “more political” on my page, but I’ve learned since becoming a wheelchair user that my very existence is political. The government shout about getting more disabled people into work without first fixing the systems that make work possible for us: accessible transport; access to work; mandating more businesses to offer remote/hybrid options. Sorry for the rant, but it’s honestly exhausting to be disabled sometimes. It can feel like the whole world just wants you to stay home, and if videos like this help just a few people understand our battles and have our back, it’s worth it. #wheelchairuser #accesibletravel #disabilityrights

I don’t get why trains don’t have some kind of automatic ramp system that buses have

We are not an inconvenience we are people too. It’s not our fault that we have to get people to help us get off the train.

As a fellow passenger, the best thing we can also do is to hold the door and shout for assistance. Do not attempt to carry a wheelchair user and the chair on and off the train as it'll cause injury to you both.

back when the line was run by southwest trains I always saw them get the ramp out for assistance but from what I've seen since it's been refranchised it's been way worse. I'm so sorry this has happened to you because noone should have to go through this.

If they don’t arrive with the ramp always make complaint, I did. I got a refund and extra compensation from TFL, it does work.

it is OUTRAGEOUS honestly that the ramp is not immediately available like it is on buses.

From an engineering perspective, I genuinely don't understand why trains aren't all level and flush with the platform nowadays. We've been able to do it for decades upon decades and it solves this and so many other issues.

This happened to my daughter after we had made sure to call ahead for assistance. My husband was with her thankfully, but without an ADA type set of laws it won’t get better. There’s no legal punishment or incentive to.

Why don’t more places do it like here in Melbourne? Wheelchair users enter at the front most door of the train where the driver takes out the ramp and the passenger tells the driver what stop they’re getting off at, so the driver knows when to come out and let them off. It honestly takes about a minute for the whole thing to happen and it’s rather efficient.

Queen for using your platform this way cos 90% or more of people have no clue how hard it is for people with access needs to do everyday things

in my opinion ramp should be a standard tool everyone knows and can handle. and people need to learn to help.

silly question: but given that we have automated doors, why cant we have an automated ramp that extends from the door to the floor? imagine how many people who aren't in wheelchairs but could still benefit from a ramped access (sight disabilities, elderly, small children). accessibility benefits everyone.

A guard should be proactive in checking the passenger assist app. I am always proactively checking and then ensuring any users are safely on or off the train. I’m sorry this has happened to you.
