“I can’t base my life decisions based off what I think is the most progressive thing to do” is actually a great way to put it 🔥

I understand the point and it is valid, but it's also a cop-out. If you're not putting progressive theory into practice, nothing will change. As progressive, we are the proponents of change, and the onus of creating that change is on us.

This reminds me a bit of James Baldwin’s thing where he got asked if there’s any good white people and he said something to the effect of “I can’t say every individual white person is racist but I live with white institutions every day that tell me I can’t live in a certain neighborhood, that my kids can’t go to a certain school, that I have to sit at the back of the bus, etc”

I'm not a social media influencer, nor do I want to be, but I feel like that is something that both we as viewers and content creators have to be mindful of. Content creators aren't experts. They aren't particularly special, and most of their lives are a mess (just like the rest of us). I think it's easy to fall into the trap of "this person is listened to by a lot of people, that must mean what they have to say is more valuable." When the reality is that most independent content creators happen to have a niche interest that they are well versed in, and they got lucky algorithmically. The rest of their opinions are worth as much as a random person on the street.
So rather than recognizing that a content creator is just a random person with their own flaws and traumas, it's easy for us to look up to them as some sort of authoritative source of information, which outside of their niche interest, they just aren't.
And that goes for people on the other end of that conversation too, people who get upset by what a random tiktoker says about relationships because they feel threatened by it, and I don't feel like they should. If you disagree with something she says, it's no different than the dozens of people you disagree with every day. The world is vastly bigger than the people in our phones.

Yeah, the trauma of systemic oppression can make us hypervigilant and distrustfuing. I’m not sure about the 50/50 thing though—this comes from what, the idea that men should provide financially? Or maybe that our economic system usually grants them more opportunities on the basis of gender? Based on my lived experiences, I personally feel in danger if I’m financially dependent on a man, so I feel strongly about the 50/50 thing for myself, but I also recognize that not everyone has those experiences.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they aren’t.

The problem with alot of progressive ideas is they start with theory and move to reality. Your approach is correct, start with reality and base your theories on it.

hello :
You aren't being fair to yourself right now and it is why people are jumping to debate or invalidate you. You don't owe anyone an explanation about who you are and aren't friends with. You get to be discerning in your day to day life and it's okay to have preferences on how you spend your time/energy

Honestly, if an idea doesn’t hold up in reality, I don’t think it’s that progressive anyway.

My lived experience is the opposite of yours. Everyone should live how they are most comfortable. The problem comes when we try to make others conform to what works for us.

So if someone had bad lived experiences with a certain ethnicity or race you would be totally supportive of them being racist due to those lived experiences? Or this logic is only allowed when generalizing men?

yes! omg. progressivism is still anchored to your material conditions and it's incredibly impractical to base your personal decisions on idealized situations that are just not reality
