What’s the point of having a 10 year passport when it doesn’t even last 10 years 😡 Should be 10 years and 6 months so u can use it for the full 10 years and then have 6 months to renew it!!!

in my humble opinion an expiry date should mean one can travel within that period, ensuring your travel factors being in issuing country a day before expiry. the reason for a year before? what's the reason?

This explains why it happens: If you renewed your passport before it expired, the UK Passport Office would carry over any unused time from the old passport onto the new one, up to a maximum of 9 months. So if you renewed 8 months early, your new passport could be valid for 10 years and 8 months. The UK stopped doing this in September 2018. From then on, passports were issued for 10 years only. The reason it became a problem is Brexit. When the UK was an EU member, none of this really mattered for travel within the EU. After Brexit, British citizens became "third country nationals" under Schengen rules. Those rules say a passport must: 1) Have been issued within the previous 10 years. 2) Usually have at least 3 months remaining after the planned departure date. So while your passport is still valid for the UK and for many countries outside the EU. The problem is that the Schengen Area applies a separate rule based on when the passport was issued. So if your passport was issued before September 2018, double check the passport rules for the place you are travelling to and the dates in your passport.
