Instead of grinding forward through heavily defended positions, Allied forces executed a massive leap along the northern coast, striking directly at Hollandia, a major Japanese hub. At the same time, a parallel landing at Aitape - about 140 miles to the east, was launched to secure air support, especially important since carrier coverage would only last a few days. What followed surprised the Japanese command. Through effective deception, they expected the next major blow elsewhere, leaving Hollandia relatively exposed. When U.S. forces came ashore on April 22, 1944, major resistance never fully materialized. The 24th and 41st Infantry Divisions landed miles apart and began advancing inward, aiming to cut off three key airfields. But the environment fought back. New Guinea's jungle thick, humid, and unforgiving slowed movement and strained logistics. In many cases, it proved more difficult than the scattered Japanese units in the area, many of whom were rear-echelon troops and withdrew westward as the situation collapsed. By April 26, the main airstrips were in Allied hands. That success didn't just secure Hollandia, it opened the door for a rapid advance along the northern coast. Within months, Japan's position in New Guinea was effectively broken.
