Very fortunate enough to be allowed in both the actual F-14 Tomcats Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer “Flew” in Top Gun back in 1987 when I was only 11 years old. They were at a Military Airshow I was at and the actual pilots and RIOs were there. The pilot who flew for Tom Cruise was nicknamed “Bozo”. He was incredibly nice and helpful. It was the first air show I attended where F-14s were on display. Added to the fact I was obsessed with Top Gun. Because the Airshow didn’t officially open until 9am they opened the gates at 08:30 am and me and my Dad raced up to the far end of the planes on display where the Tomcats were. It was just me, my Dad, the Pilots & RIOs and the Tomcats. The crew saw me stretching up as high as I could to try and touch the nose probe and asked me if I knew anything about their planes. I told them they were Grumman F-14 Tomcats and just touching them made me so happy. Because there was nobody else around at this point they very kindly let me sit inside both of them as long as I didn’t touch anything. Best day of my life. To look back over the “Swing” wings while climbing into the plane was a memory I’ll never forget. The pilot “Bozo” showed me a brown leather photo album of behind the scenes on Top Gun with him, Tom Cruise, Tony Scott and all the cast laughing and joking, even Michael Ironside. My Dad still has the pictures of me inside both planes to this day. I have all their autographs. Only thing was it wasn’t “Maverick’s” helmet I put on but Bozo’s!. To this day they made an 11 year old boy the happiest boy in the world and have all my Christmases all rolled into one!. 😎😊👍🏻
