You can tell if the oil is off by smelling it. It goes years past the best by date, but if it is stored in a too warm environment, it can turn. Then it will smell very rancid—the best way I can describe the smell is “dusty acidic”.

Oil does not expire. I read that you could drink the one found in romans shipwrecks, not sure about that one but definitely can have oil from a few years
