I’d highly recommend Adorno and Horkheimer’s “the Dialectic of Enlightenment.” If your vision of America is painted by light BECAUSE of European enlightenment philosophy, you really should dig into what exactly that philosophy is. The book is quite dense with references but a simple summary or overview would atleast put you into conversation with this thing you hold so near and dear.
