The song began as an acoustic guitar instrumental created by Espen Lind and Amund Bjørklund. When Ne-Yo first sat down with the production team Stargate to listen to the track, the prominent acoustic guitar strumming gave it a distinct country twang. Ne-Yo openly admitted he originally envisioned the track as a country song and immediately pictured Faith Hill or Shania Twain singing it. But when Beyoncé heard it she was certain. She rearranged the vocals, asked for new drums, and made it hers. When the finished record was ready, there were real concerns that urban radio might not even play it because of the acoustic guitars it felt too pop, too different. “Nobody expected it to be the phenomenon it was,” Stargate’s Tor Hermansen said. “It surprised everyone.” Well Hive🐝 it didn’t just chart. It went to .1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for ten consecutive weeks. It was the .1 song on the year end Billboard Hot 100 for all of 2007. Certified 6x Platinum by the RIAA , six million equivalent units in the United States alone with being nominated for Record of the Year at the Grammys. And three years later, she brought it back to its acoustic bones in that 1,500 seat room in Las Vegas.
