backrooms was great for a very young director without experience and many of the shots were gorgeous and unsettling. i do agree that the storytelling aspect/narrative structure could have been stronger though

I thought the script was lacking and the third act fell flat but the sequence recorded on handheld genuinely scared me so much

I think more movie reviewers would benefit from going "I didn't get the vibe and that's ok" bc as much as I do agree that the third act was a little flat script wise, I wouldn't describe the movie as "underwhelming". it was as backrooms as you can get because it was the uncomfortable feeling you have in a place that seems almost normal, as a director and concept creator it was amazing. and it being his first movie? i think it was great. people comparing it to other horror movies that aren't the same genre is not only a disservice and show the lack of knowledge of some people of the diversity within the horror genre imo

Lowkey think that’s the whole point of backrooms- it’s a continuous area that rly doesn’t lead to anywhere new so the fact that you felt it wasn’t going anywhere is pretty true to the YouTube shorts! 🙂‍↔️🙂‍↔️I loved it and def watched it for the vibes!

just as an FYI Kane didn't write the script, he directed a film based on the script.

walking out of the theater after Backrooms, I said, “I loved it! Best movie I’ve seen this year!” my husband said, “oh yeah? what was it about?” I said “Uh…..” Touché.

Ngl i did not like the writing of this movie but i think calling it the vibe movie is incredibly reductive to what the film was trying to do

It was definitely a more conceptual movie, but as someone who was unfamiliar with it. I was still entertained throughout the two hour run time. Like 7.5/10

The difference between Obsession and Backrooms was definitely in the script! Obsessions was tight, Backrooms had ton of bloat. The practical set built for Backrooms was really cool tho and the acting was pretty good. I would be interested to see what the director does next, I don’t think he was responsible for the weak script.

I do have to say though, I think they stayed true to the purpose of the original creepypasta: mystery. I’m glad it wasn’t a nice tied up, realistic big reveal, but an open to interpretation ending. I love a move that gets you thinking, but there will be ppl that will say “wtf was the point.” And the point is ✨ mystery ✨ I loved your take!

I really could’ve done without Mark Duplass and the lazy third act explainer monologue.

I was also really underwhelmed. I think parsons has a great understanding of visual language and tone but nothing else worked about this movie. It had nothing to say. It made gestures towards isolation and male loneliness but did nothing with the material. The characters were poorly written and I didn’t care about them. And the weird half assed explanation served to undermine the horror and strip it of its mystery despite its inadequacies in even successfully explaining anything. The longer you spent in the backrooms the goofier and less scary it became. I lost it at the mural and ‘tables aren’t supposed to bleed’ being scrawled on it.

I felt physically uncomfortable for most of it from the movement of the camera and the forced perspective angles but it really lacked a story

the movie fell flat for me unfortunately. 😭 i felt like the trailers were scarier than the movie itself. it felt like we were watching yellow light asmr for two hours. there was lots of cool shots that impressed me and i loved the camcorder shots. however it wasn’t enough to save the movie for me
