Read your owner's manual in factory service information. modern cars have what's called Onboard Refueling Vapor Recovery. It is designed to recover vapors with your engine off. a few things will happen if your car is running while you are refueling. it might run an evaporative emissions self test and throw a check engine light. this will set a fault code in your PCM memory. It also will not properly utilize the onboard vapor recovery system. Also, do not top off your vehicle.By continuing to refuel after it has automatically clicked off. This can damage those emissions equipment. If you don't wanna deal with all this stuff, you have to buy a car, that's thirty years old, at least.

I think there's a higher risk of getting struck by lightning on a clear day than a car igniting gas fumes from running while being refueled.

Safety concern plus you’re burning gas while you pump. Just turn it off instead of idling.

I have seen a car catch on fire because the owner didn’t turn off the vehicle while sitting on his cell phone. He jumped out of the car, knocked the nozzle out, but it was still pumping gas. The car was on fire, the pump was on fire, the ground was on fire…it was insane. I definitely turn off my car now.

the only time I ever didnt was when my car battery had died after I jumped it off I had to get gas to get home and I didnt want it to die again (bc in case anyone reading this didnt know usually unless theres an underlying issue the battery charges while its cranked but if you jump it off then turn it off it may need to be jumped again)
