At Torts R Us (tortsrus.org), our nonprofit tortoise sanctuary in Florida is dedicated to caring for and protecting these amazing animals, especially the babies. We absolutely adore our hatchlings and put immense time, effort, and love into giving them the best possible start in life. While they may look like simple pets, baby red-footed tortoises actually require very specific and consistent care to thrive. Proper husbandry is critical. These babies need high humidity to support healthy shell development and prevent pyramiding. They require UVB lighting for proper calcium absorption and bone growth, as well as a carefully maintained heat gradient so they can regulate their body temperature. The substrate must be moisture-retentive yet safe, and their enclosures—commonly known as tortoise tables—must be fully set up with hides, water access, and the correct environmental conditions before a hatchling is ever introduced. Caring for a red-footed tortoise is not something to take lightly. These tiny, adorable babies grow into strong, long-living animals that can live 50 years or more. That means bringing one into your life is a lifelong commitment. It’s essential to understand that this is not a temporary pet—it’s a responsibility that requires dedication, knowledge, and ongoing care for decades.
