Many of our mothers had few expectations of emotional intimacy, companionship, or partnership from their husbands. They built meaningful lives around what was available to them and survived the best way they knew how. They were not foolish. They were adapting. Today, many younger women look back with disappointment. Many older women look at younger women and see delusion. But perhaps both groups are simply responding to different realities. When survival is on the table, people prioritize security. When survival is no longer the primary concern, people begin to crave: • connection • friendship • emotional intimacy • partnership • shared purpose Many men today also want more than the distant marriage models they witnessed growing up. They want to be known by their wives, not merely served by them. Many women want more than providing meals and sex. They want a meaningful union with a person they can genuinely share life with. For Christians, the conversation becomes even more complex as we navigate African traditions, cultural expectations, Jewish customs, and the teachings of Christ. The question is not whether our mothers were wrong. The question is whether the purpose of a marriage entered voluntarily is simply coexistence or deeper connection.
