A similar thing happened in the Jasper, Arkansas elementary school years ago. Children and others were taken to the hospital where nurses were also affected by whatever it was that sickened the children. No cause was ever disclosed.

probably cleaning agents mixing in the drains and releasing gas from sewer lines into the hospital they said "ammonia smell" so it was probably a mixing of ammonia and bleach in large amounts underneath the building they probably didn't think it would be an issue due to water and that they weren't using the different agents together alternatively; an industrial building nearby was pouring chemicals down their drain irresponsibly (but not illegally) I don't envy the plumbers and civil engineers here
