Not to mention that Wikipedia has redirects. If you don't know, a redirect is basically an alternate name (eg. typing in "usa" brings you to "United States"). Those could just as easily be used to address the "their current name isn't popular"; the article name would be their current name, and redirects can be used for people searching with their alternative name.

Spanish Wikipedia has a policy to use the translated name of Galician towns, despite the official and only correct name being in galician. This has consequences, because many apps use Wikipedia as a source, so Google Maps uses the wrong name which is confusing

As an avid Wikipedia editor of mostly non-person articles (organizations primarily), I hadn't even noticed or thought about the way that Wiki and editors at large treat this as such a massive double standard with adamant opinions on that. I don't take this as canvassing, as an active editor this is something I'm going to be monitoring more and getting involved in discussions and talk pages I can contribute to without it becoming canvassing.

i feel like its only appropriate as "xyz (born: abc)" and then being referred to properly throughout the rest of the page, with maybe a note of "and this is when xyz changed their name to xyz" and no other time.

When people go by a stage name or pen name, they still use that name when talking about their life before they changed it. They say both their legal name and professional name at the top of the article, and then use their professional name throughout the article

related anecdote: I had a book about Muhammad Ali when I was a kid and it also used the name he was given at birth. I was convinced it was a printing error because why are they spending so much time on someone other than the guy the book's about?
