Ice Cube – Today Was A Good Day (1993) Ice Cube was sitting in a hotel room in the summer of 1992 at the absolute peak of his career. The money had come, the recognition had come, the Boyz n the Hood acting credits had come. He told Blender magazine that he was in a genuine state of euphoria and started thinking about how all anyone ever heard from him was the aggression and the politics. He said he was known for rapping gangsta stuff but nobody ever heard about all the good days he actually had. So he went into the studio and built one, detail by detail, like a perfect day assembled from memory. DJ Pooh produced the beat around the Isley Brothers' Footsteps in the Dark, one of the warmest, most quietly hypnotic grooves in soul music, and placed it so perfectly underneath Cube's storytelling that the whole thing feels like a Sunday morning in slow motion. Cube recorded the demo in his home studio first, then took it to Echo Sound Studios in Los Angeles to cut the album version. There is no chorus. Just three verses and an outro, Cube narrating his ideal day from waking up to laying his head back down, and somehow making every single line feel both personal and completely universal at the same time. Then there is the internet rabbit hole this song created years later. A Tumblr user spent considerable time using clues buried in the lyrics, the Lakers beating the SuperSonics, Yo MTV Raps being on air, a smog free day in LA, the availability of pagers, to try and pinpoint the exact real date Ice Cube was describing. They eventually landed on January 20, 1992 as the most likely candidate. Ice Cube later confirmed the day never actually happened as described and was built from memories of several different good days stitched together. He did not give away the answer. He just smiled.
