@ajsaxsma: 3 things I’ve learned about strong dialogue after 16 years of writing nearly every day #creativewriting #dialoguewriting #dialogue #dialoguetips #dialoguescene
so instead of having to narrate the feelings of a character, allow the dialogue to do that? And allow the behaviour of that character to deepen the complexity rather than telling the readers what they're experiencing?

I have been trying to add the quote-unquote “anger as a defence mechanism” dialogue thing. The person is a leader and isn’t a very good one but gets mad when people contradict them. Idk if it’s going well

Sorry, but I don't have coping mechanisms, so neither do my characters ✌️😂 /j

I have a conflict avoidant character who is also reactive only when doing nothing stops working. it's made for some interesting conversations. he tries to leave and avoid heavy topics he deflects, he shuts down, but when none of that works his true childish nature comes out and I love that about him.

One of my characters is the mediator in the friend group and as middle child myself, I just give him that middle child energy. It’s been illuminating my own tendencies. I’ll let you know if that’s a good or bad thing. I haven’t decided yet.

When it comes to coping mechanisms, how do you write the build up to the character discovering their outlet without sounding too cliche?

This is helpful .. z the coping mechanism … I need to use this instead of some exposition that’s crept in ….

I have to watch your content to keep believing that real writing still has a place on this planet. I’m such a hypocrite—pro ghostwriter here, losing my soul under the NDAs—but I can’t read books anymore. Because apparently, most of their authors don’t listen to your advice. 😭😭😭

Any advice on writing prose?
I tend to not have a proper flow... And make story more "Jarring"....
So... Any ideas on how to fix that issue? Or a template to follow?
When I read published novels vs mine the difference is clear. I tend to describe things here and there without a proper flow.

sir any advice on balancing description alongside dialogue. I love using action tags or weaving in the speaker interacting with environment. but sometimes its not enough to paint a clear picture of the scene

Author Steve DeVries📚 :
I had a couple editors tell me that the humor from my mmc during intense situations needed to reflect the seriousness of the situation. my question to them was, should I then remove all flaws from the characters to better reflect each interaction. that seems counterintuitive. gallows humor is a thing and my mmc is reflecting his life trauma in forced levity. 😁
