The events follow an urgent High Court application filed on behalf of 88 foreign nationals and the NGO Kopanang Africa Against Xenophobia. They sought to block the municipality and Mayor Mduduzi Myeza from evicting undocumented migrants and closing associated businesses. The matter was heard earlier this week, with the mayor’s office indicating opposition to the application. Prior to this, Mayor Myeza had publicly called for action against undocumented foreign nationals, directing property owners to stop renting to them and vowing a crackdown after Easter. The municipality cited concerns over unlawful business operations in the central business district.
