This is kinda nostalgic for me, my first experience with servers or networking of any kind was this exact case. Felt impossible back then lol.

This doesn’t have anything to do with software engineering. More like network engineering.

I host mine on my home server, and connect to a free VPS on Oracle that has a static IP through netbird and use NPM to route Minecraft traffic through the netbird tunnel to my home server. All the data is local, and it's 100% free. Can just point a cloudflare domain at the VPS's static IP if you want a url. I'm surprised that the fact that Oracle has a free tier of VPS isn't more commonly known.

should have mentioned CGNAT and the terrible frustration we all felt as kids when everything was set up correctly but the server wouldn't work outside LAN 😖

You can also use playit.gg instead of port forwarding

the dns part is bullshit, you don’t need to own a vps to use dns and people don’t need to memorize your public ip if you have a domain that points to your ip.

It feels impossible to me still because of CGNAT i don’t get an ipv4 address unless i pay my isp a heck of a lot more. I wish we fully switch to ipv6 soon.

you forgot to mention another downside of self hosting is that most internet providers allocate IPS dynamically, so if your modem ever restarts you will be assigned a different external IP address and your buddies won't be able to find your server anymore

It is not that easy for big servers, they have to get the right engine, such as Folia, Canvas or Pumpkin (rust-based) so they don't crash, java based engines also take up a bunch of ram and cpu power, and you gotta have DDoS, anti-bot and anti-cheat protection
