@bdccarpenter: A few days ago, many of you sent me this video (I have trimmed it to save time). It was clearly aiming for comedy (I think) but many people in the comments said they disliked it because it had a mean vibe. The idea is essentially, don’t trust a personal trainer who doesn’t look a certain way. Personally, I am not a fan of this psychology. A personal trainers knowledge does not correlate with their muscle mass or inversely correlate with their body fat percentage. Let me make one thing crystal clear. It would be super easy for me to play into this. I am a dude with a six pack, I could make all of my videos topless and make it sound like ANY of you who have more body fat than me don’t know as much as me, because otherwise you would be leaner and more muscular. But that is silly, because you all know that isn’t how knowledge works. So yeah, no need to pile on and give the creator a hard time. Just giving my two cents. Thoughts? P.S., At the end of each post I let you know that if you want to support me, you can order my best-selling book, Everything Fat Loss (Iink in profile). #personaltrainer #personaltraining #personaltrainers #fitnesscoach #fitnesstraining

Fitness is not a look. Even high level athletes are built differently

ALSO, there are other reasons to exercise besides appearance/weight. Especially as we age, but also in general. Mobility, heart health, bone density, stamina, pain reduction, mental health, and more. And those goals could use (and deserve) guidance as well.

just look at boxer or wrestler trainers - they don't look as if they could compete but are the best of the best

personally I would prefer a not-perfect-body trainer, as I don't want to train to have some type of body, but for my body to be stronger, have a wide range of movement, etc. So a regular looking trainer would show me that every body could move 😳😳😳

Well, that's like saying Usain Bolt's coach needs to be faster than him. Which is obviously not true. The coach/trainer is there to train you, not to show off

Also many people with body image issues might be too emberessed and scared to train with model type trainer. Being scared of being shamed by someone you are paying to help you (might be irrational fear, but its real) and it can be easier and more comfortable to start with someone, who looks "more chill" also not every person wants to be super skinny, some people just want to be able to move better, to get fit after injury, to gain confidence....people are different and have different goals and thats okay and we should not judge!🤍✨️

i think different trainers are right for different people, and thats fine. if what you need to get the most out of your training is a trainer that is fit/skinny/toned/whatever you want to call it, get a trainer like that. but dont talk smack about trainers that might not look like that but are the right fit for another person, who would get nothing out of being trained by a person like that. both exist in the industry, both are needed, they might serve different purposes, they might use different methods, but ultimately they achive the same goal

It's almost as if being knowledgeable about training, and being willing to invest the time and effort in maintaining a particular physique, are different things.

I love when I go to a class at the gym and the trainer is a "regular" person (I mean not like they were cut out of a fitness magazine). but overall I don't care how a person looks. just how you wouldn't care how any teacher looks.

if i'm looking for a trainer, i'm looking for someone who knows the form for the exercises i need to be doing, who understands biomechanics to a degree, who can give good cues on using the correct muscles and who can make accommodations to programs or movements for people with different anatomy, ability or experience levels. who gives a f if they have more body fat?

Yup. Eye candy doesn’t mean jack if they can’t deliver what the client wants. Then, the client is either blamed for being lazy or undisciplined

The best info someone can give me if I’m looking for someone is results with clients. A variety of clients. Because everyone is different. I don’t care how they look. I want to know if they can help me

I went from 280-220 and could bench over 350. Worked out regularly for 2 years and became a trainer to help others. I have gotten much more interest in myself as a trainer when I dropped to 180 and have more definition, even though due to a prolonged back injury I have lost a decent amount of muscle.

My trainer does not look like the stereotypical trainer, but he is an amazing trainer. I’ve never been stronger. Plus he’s just an amazing human.

I his perimenopause and got a public health degree during a pandemic and then watched my entire field fall apart. I still maintain my ACSM. I am capable of training still even though my body does not look like it did before 2020

I am a former competitor in strong man competitions, the build needed to lift atlas stones and not shatter your spine is not "typical" bodybuilder. My brother is a hockey player and he has a completely different build. He still trains with me if he wants better strength levels and I train with him for fitness. One of my coaches was basically round l but he could lift ungodly weights

This feels related to that guy who was wondering why people don’t like a physique that he finds ideal. People are varied in their tastes and motivations. Not everyone wants to look a specific way just because some people find it appealing. Not everyone has the same fitness goals based on aesthetics.
